Phillippa Macdonald

A name for me carries positive or negative energy and depends on how it is positively empowered and embraced internally, hence I have adopted my Grandmother's maiden name of Macdonald.

I feel a profound soulful positive alignment in taking pride in my scottish heritage, especially in honour of my grandmother, Frances Macdonald whom I loved dearly and also with the inheritance of my love for music as she was an accomplished pianist.

When I visited the Scottish Isles last year and stood on the very ground in Keppoch where my ancestors resided, my soul was fulfilled with the resonance of claircognizance; the knowing of the flavour of their lifestyle and of the land itself. So as always when I hear any genre of music it has seemed to fill my bones, senses and soul with a quiet joy, warmth and wonder and now on listening and in just taking any quality soulful time out for that matter, it takes me right back to the colours, the flavour, the resonance, as if the rich pungency of the earth itself is coming up to meet me at cellular level and it's natural song is singing within me, calling me home and I feel everything the Scots stood for....and this is the greater part of the essence of me.

They say timing is everything and since my grandmother was an accomplished pianist it has been the time for me recently to have bought an 18th century walnut gem of a piano which I have had restored, as I have always felt it in my bones to play piano and just naturally so by ear.

And so with this flavour of music running in my heart and bones I know myself to be a compassionate but fierce passionate free warrior woman spirit which resonates with my Scottish roots and ancestors who wholeheartedly stood up for freedom and justice, it is with this certainty that I consider my new surname an expression of my life force, an embodiment of all that I have encompassed in this life time, my past life times and that of my Scottish ancestors.

And so a wee bit of history re my Grandmothers name; my father's mother was Frances Macdonald who was born in Texas, USA.

My great grand father John Macdonald (b. 1856) migrated from Scotland to the USA and married Jeanne Rae Bell (b. 1868) in the USA. They had 13 children, 11 born in Texas (three passed away) and 2 born in NZ as they migrated with 8 children to New Zealand in around 1900 and settled in Otautau and Winton in Southland, as farmers. My grandmother had 4 sisters and 4 brothers in NZ of which 2 brothers went back to the USA, she went to Melrose College, later married and lived in Timaru, South Canterbury.
